THQ Gamers Day - Deadly Creatures

by: Chuck -
More On: Deadly Creatures
If you want an example of THQ’s desire to take chances look no further than Deadly Creatures. This game breaks the Wii mold by placing you in the role of a tarantula and a scorpion as they try to survive in the desert. The game has you switching back and forth between the two main insects as the story progresses and we get to observe the world through their eyes. I got to see a full walkthrough of the first scorpion level of the game (which is the second level in the game) and in which you have to work your way to the desert surface through a series of underground tunnels. As you travel through the level you’ll have to defend yourself against other bugs as well as finding your way to the surface and along the way you’ll learn new skills and abilities.

As the scorpion progressed through the level you passed through dens of other bugs and even crawled through a human skeleton which really provides a strong since of scale. The audio track really increases the creep factor and hauntingly in and out of the game. Talking to one of the producers of the game he indicated they were going for a horror vibe for the audio track and this adds a lot to the overall feel of the game.

What works:
- Unique concept
- Breaks the crap mini-game Wii routine
- Excellent sound design and music
- Interesting level design and perspective
- Cool God of War like finishing moves

What Doesn’t:
- Could be kind of a hard sell for the Wii audience
- Underground level design is a little hard to follow sometimes as you have to think in three dimensions because the critters can crawl up the walls (they are working on this item though and should be fixed by the time the game ships.
