Splitgate 2 hosting open alpha for PC and consoles later this month

More On: Splitgate 2

Amidst a busy State of Play presentation yesterday, one of my most-anticipated games of 2025 – Splitgate 2 – made an appearance to share the good news of an open alpha taking place later this month. The alpha test will run from February 27th through March 2nd on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with full cross-platform play.

The portal-hopping FPS will expand on the original game in several ways, including new 24-player game modes, new maps, new weapons, and the introduction of gadgets. The new multi-team game modes see three teams of eight players competing in either Domination or Hotzone, which are territory control-style modes. There is also a new mode called Splitball – a two-team arena mode that combines Capture the Flag with the Halo’s Oddball mode. The final new mode is Firecracker, which is a version of Search & Destroy that allows respawning. Of course, classic Team Deathmatch and Hotzone are returning as well.

Three maps will be available at launch, as will eight primary and secondary weapons across three playable factions, bringing the total weapon count to 24. The sequel also introduces gadgets to the mix to add more strategic depth to the gameplay. One example is the Porta-Portal, which the Aeros faction use to create a portal anywhere, not just on designated portal surfaces.

I’m ready for the return of Splitgate (though you can still play the OG) and cannot wait to jump into the alpha in a couple of weeks. Splitgate 2 is scheduled to launch in 2025, though no official release date has been announced.
