A massively exciting announcement from Square-Enix today has shaken the VR world to its core. Well, I might be projecting a bit. But it has certainly gotten my blood pumping.

Square-Enix today announced that it has adapted it’s fantastic 2022 tactical JRPG Triangle Strategy for an October 31 release on Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3. The full game will be playable in VR, with a new hands-on control scheme that allows players to swivel the battleground and manual place characters in the battlefield.

The Meta Quest version of Triangle Strategy will also take advantage of the Quest 3’s pass through technology, allowing players to drop the game’s gorgeous battlefields into their real-world environments.

I’ve been waiting for something like this for years, ever since VR appeared on the consumer market. Triangle Strategy is a great game, and a perfect opening shot in what will hopefully be a long, protracted salvo of game adaptations. A quality JRPG, with a ton of meat on its bones, playable in VR. No first person shenanigans, no stupid gimmicks, just a great game playable in the 3D VR space. I’m hoping that Square-Enix is testing the waters with this release, because I would snap up pretty much any game they port over using this process. Would I pay $40 for a VR version of either Octopath Traveler game? You bet your sweet booties, I would.

I’m loving the fact that Square-Enix seems to have been thoughtful in their adaptation here, and I’m hopeful that other companies follow suit. There are so many great games that would be spectacular in VR, and I’m hopeful that Triangle Strategy is just the first drop in an eventual flood.
