Exophobia wants to remind you of your youth

More On: Exophobia

I remember taking turns playing Chex Quest on my best friend’s computer in his house back in the late 90s. The game was a promotional item you could get in Chex cereal boxes. Unfortunately, my parents loved me as a child and would buy me sugar cereal; I never had a chance to get Chex Quest for myself. When I say Exophobia reminds me of Chex Quest and not Doom, I mean it. The enemies are even dancing in the trailer to Exophobia. I think I’m getting to the point where nostalgia plays a big part in what I am into, and to be honest, I’m fine with it. Let me feel happy as happy as I did back in 1999, taking turns with my friend, sharing one computer. In fact, developer Zarc Attack says that this, “first-person shooter [is] paying homage to the classics while carving out its own legacy with Metroidvania-style action. In Exophobia, players navigate the twisted corridors of a crashed human spaceship, now a breeding ground for alien nightmares.”

Exophobia says there are relentless hordes of aliens with a variety of weapons that will help you to grow stronger with each encounter, unlocking powerful weapon upgrades and game-changing powerups. And, of course, all while see this play out on in retro aesthetics. Exophobia wants to capture the essence of old-school shooters with modern twists, adding in some Metroidvania-style action.

Exophobia will be released digitally on July 23rd for Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. There has been a slight delay in the physical release, and it will now be on August 20th for the PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
