Activision held its big reveal for this year’s entry in the Call of Duty franchise yesterday, sharing a wealth of details and first look at gameplay. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a sequel to 2022’s Modern Warfare 2 and will feature a full slate of modes, including single-player campaign, multiplayer suite, Zombies mode, and of course, integration with Call of Duty: Warzone.
Development on Modern Warfare 3 is being led by Sledgehammer Games, which previously led development on 2021’s Vanguard, 2017’s WWII, and 2014’s Advanced Warfare. They are being assisted by Infinity Ward and the usual roster of Call of Duty support teams.
The game will return Makarov as the lead antagonist, as Task Force 141 heads out on another globe-trotting mission to take him down. New this year are what Sledgehammer is calling Open Combat Missions, which are more sandbox-like single-player missions that give players freedom to approach a mission however they see fit. Go guns blazing, go silent with night vision goggles, go through the front door, sneak your way in – it’s your choice.
On the multiplayer side of things, the game will launch with remade versions of all 16 maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2, with support for new modes and mechanics. Speaking of new mechanics, Sledgehammer is introducing Tac-Stance, a midpoint between hip-firing and aiming down sights that is designed for close quarters combat. They’re also adding Evolving Loadouts that let you choose your own gloves, vests, boots, and more to cater to your personal gameplay style.
Zombies is coming to Modern Warfare 3 as well; it features the largest map the mode has ever had and includes a new Dark Aether Zombies story set in the Modern Warfare sub-universe.
