When one of my friends suggested this movie, I wasn't really familiar with the material and I didn't know what to expect. After walking out of the theater, I was so amazed at how well done
The King of Kong : Fistful of Quarters was and how great the movie turned out to be. The story of laid-off Steve Wiebe (pronounced Wee-Bee) and his battle with Billy Mitchell for the
Donkey Kong high score was one of great humor, sacrifice, and emotion. Steve's quest to earn respect and recognition as one of the top if not top
Donkey Kong players is masterfully played out in this documentary. The journey to break the record is littered with many obstacles from the official site of high scores,
Twin Galaxies, to those that are Billy Mitchell's friends. I'm impressed with the patience that Steve's wife has with his obsession early on in trying to break the score after he got laid off especially since they had two young kids together. The record score attempt really takes a backseat to the two major personalities of the movie and how different they are. Both are incredible players and I was really engrossed in the story of the two contrasting personalities. The theater I was in also had a good laugh everytime Billy's wife was on screen but I won't spoil it as to why. You'll just have to see it for yourself. If you get a chance to catch the movie, don't pass it up as it seems to be on a limited run. I highly recommend it.
