If you have an Atari Legacy Arcade 1up cabinet, or you have Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration (because you should), you've probably skipped past this game. And lets be honest, you skipped it, because just like in the 80's, this top down space shooter was "too hard". But you know what? It's 2022, and you've played Elden Ring, on purpose, and Atari knows that. Which is probably why they are re-releasing, and remastering the very rare Arcade game, Akka Arrh.
Akka Arrh is a Jeff Minter and Llamasoft masterpiece. Jeff has created games for pretty much every generation of Atari, including the fantastic Tempest 4000. Now he brings the space shooter back for the thrill seekers who want that old thing back, with a nice touch of modern technology. You control a fixed middle turret, trying to keep invaders from breaking through The Sentinels perimeter. As the enemy gets closer, you can zoom in and get more accurate shots, and defend your shields. Once a shot comes through the shield, it's a one shot game over. Fortunately, you don't have to keep feeding it quarters.
Akka Arrh releases early 2023, and has 50 stages of gameplay. The two modes will allow you to start from the beginning, or pick up where you left off. There are also accessibility options that makes the gameplay more sensory friendly, due to the flashing colors, and many color splashes on screen. It will be on pretty much everything, including the Atari VCS. We will definitely be playing it here, but I highly recommend you play the old Akka Arrh to familiarize yourself with the controls. And if you have access to a trackball, you'll be that much cooler.
