I don't mind wearing my heart on my sleeve. If I love something, I love it, and I don't mind proclaiming it for the whole world to see. But even better is when two great tastes taste great together, stoking my fanboy fires into a raging inferno. Today I am faced with a brand new and entirely unexpected Reese's Cup of fandom - a new Supermassive horror game with Lance Henriksen in it - and my fragile horror-fan heart can barely contain itself.
2k and Supermassive yesterday announced The Quarry, a new franchise game/film that is clearly the long-awaited spiritual successor to Until Dawn. I want to be clear here - I really enjoyed The Dark Pictures Anthology games for what they were, but their bite-sized length did leave me wanting more than they could provide. I've been waiting for something a little meatier from Supermassive, The Quarry looks like it might be just what the doctor ordered.
The story seems to revolve around some teenaged kids that are stranded for one last night at a summer camp. The plot is not entirely clear from the trailer, but I'm going to guess that the group is faced with more than one danger; I'm seeing signs of both "killer redneck family" and "supernatural threat" in this trailer. Doubling down on the big bad is right in line with Supermassive's M.O.; the company openly loves to jam multiple horror tropes together in a jar and shake them up.
As usual for a Supermassive game, the visuals look absolutely superb. Supermassive is an industry leader at making motion capture look detailed and natural; they are able to animate famous faces in ways that allow the actors' performance and emotions to shine though the graphical engine. We are far beyond the uncanny valley in these games.
And yes, I make a big deal about Lance Henriksen (I mean, have you seen Pumpkinhead?), but it would be irresponsible not to mention the rest of the stellar cast Supermassive has assembled for this thing. It's exactly the sort of cast I would assemble for a great Friday-night-at-the-cinema horror flick. David Arquette ("Scream" franchise), Ariel Winter ("Modern Family", but also "Sophia the First"), Justice Smith ("Jurassic World", "Detective Pikachu"), Brenda Song ("Dollface"), Lin Shaye ("A Nightmare on Elm Street", the "Insidious" franchise), Ethan Suplee (in his current Superman form)...the list goes on and on. And of course, Lance Henriksen, everybody's favorite synthetic (though he prefers the term "artificial person").
Also somewhat hidden in the cast is Skyler Gisondo - one of the best comedic young actors today. You might recognize him from Santa Clarita Diet or The Righteous Gemstones, but if you haven't seen it, you should also check out Time Freak - a great comedic sci-fi film from 2018. The fact that this guy was listed like eighth in the cast scroll really speaks to the caliber of talent Supermassive has put together for The Quarry. I mean, they pulled Lin Shaye, who is one of the busiest and most recognizable talents in genre film. Bottom line - this cast rocks.
I'm clearly excited for The Quarry - which is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles on June 10. I'm sure we are in for the same twisty-turny replayable fun that Supermassive is known for. We'll share more information as it becomes available.
