Following up on the first release, The Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars, Square Enix will be offering the second installment The Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden later this month. The Voice of Cards series is strictly a classic RPG, but it is powered by the storytelling talents of the dev team behind the NieR games. The series takes an extremely unique approach in that each of the tales is told entirely though the medium of playing cards. Characters, abilities, enemies, weapons and armor, even the world itself are build from playing cards. It is a novel presentation and although my experience with the first game was a little underwhelming overall, I think it provides a unique experience both for that storytelling and as an opportunity to jump in to a modern game utilizing classic RPG mechanics.
The Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden is a standalone game from the first and will release on February 17th for PS4, PC, and Switch. Pre-order bonuses are available on Steam and the Nintendo eShop which unlock two "DLCs," but the DLC in question seem to be entirely cosmetic - a card design and an ocean-themed design for the game table. There is also a NieR bundle that opens up a number of NieR themed cosmetics for just about every aspect of the game, from the cards, game boards to even the dice and a jukebox for background music.
