Many people were wondering how Intel would respond from AMD's last Ryzen release. It was the hot CPU to get and everyone wanted it. Well, today Intel is announcing their 12th gen Alder Lake CPU and it looks like a winner.
Intel is boasting being on par or up to 11% faster than an AMD 5950X in certain games. The caveat being is that the tests they posted were done on a Windows 11 Pro system, which could mean this was done pre-patch. AMD had some slowness issues with Windows 11 that recently got fixed so we'll have to see once reviewers get their hands on the CPUs to see how well they really do run against the competition.
For gamer's Intel is pushing the i9-12900K as the best gaming CPU out there. It's going to be a $669.99 CPU and that's the CPU Intel used to pit against the AMD 5950X, which is what I currently have now. It's a 16 core 3.2GHz CPU which matches the 16 cores of the 5950X.
You'll also be seeing next week an i7-12700K which runs at 3.6Hz and features 12 cores. That will be on sale for $469.99. Finally, the i5-12600K runs at 3.7GHz and contain 10 cores going for $319.99. That i5-12600K sounds interesting given it's only two cores less than the one CPU above it.
The 12th generation CPUs will be compatible with both DDR4 and the new DD5 memory that will be pretty expensive but can support higher capacities and of course, be faster. Not only that, but the CPU will also support PCI-E Gen 5. Yes, you read that right. PCI-E Gen 5. I mean it wasn't too long ago was it that PCI-E Gen 4 came out, but here we were with CPU's going with support to PCI-E Gen 5.
Release date is November 4th and you can see from the Microcenter ad below the prices that I mentioned above.
