The second Zombieland movie had no right being as good as it was. Typically, when studios let ten years float by between installments in a film franchise, the result is a big pile of nonsense. But Zombieland: Double Tap was actually pretty fun, capturing the weird, sarcastic humor of the first film. So I'm actually kind of into the idea of a VR game based in the Zombieland universe.
Sony Pictures and XR Games this week announced Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever, coming soon to VR systems (all of 'em, it seems). Headshot Fever is not the typical zombie game though, with players creeping through abandoned cities for supplies and such. Nope, this is a Zombieland game, so its all about raging through a parade of zombies and racking up as many headshots as you can before the time runs out. Kill of the week, anyone?
According to the recent press release, "killing zombies isn’t gonna hack it. This is a racing sport and to be the best you’ve got to kill in style. That’s where our Adrenaline system kicks in. Nail two quick headshots in a row and adrenaline slows down time - making you faster! Line up your next shot, keep the combo going, and pop those zombie heads! The longer your combo, the faster your time - and fractions of a second count in the Zombieland Invitational!"
Yep, sounds like they are nailing the spirit of the source material. Players will interact with the characters from the films (and their voice sound-alikes) while training up, and then compete in worldwide leaderboards to find out who is the top zombie killer. Neat.
Zombieland: Headshot Fever is expected to release later this spring on Oculus Quest, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and a little later on PSVR. Get ready to do your best to not suck.
