It's been interesting to watch how PlayStation Plus has been handling the release of the PS5. As far as free-game delivery goes, PS Plus has historically been unpredictable. A few years ago, I remember getting two PS3 games, two PS4 games, and two Vita games each month. That cornucopia of goodies eventually dried up, settling down into a steady flow of two PS4 games each month, with an occasional PSVR game thrown into the mix in what was clearly a half-hearted experiment.
But things are off to a better start on PS5. Right out of the gate, PS Plus members were gifted with the weirdness that is Bugsnax. The following month, we got a nice PS5 upgrade of Maneater, the silly-but-super-entertaining open world shark game. And this month, we get Concrete Genie (awesome), the next-gen remaster of Control (no more slowdown!) and the brand spanking new PS5 original, Destruction AllStars.
What is Destruction AllStars? Well, to my uneducated eye, it kinda looks like a mix between the Burnout franchise and Twisted Metal. Players jump into an arena for vehicular mayhem, but the twist is you can actually get out of your car and run around on foot, taking over other vehicles when yours gets destroyed. Here are a few selling points from a recent press release:
Become an AllStar: Sixteen fearless, charismatic Destruction AllStars make up the roster of international competitors vying for the Global Destruction Federation Championship. Utilize each AllStar’s abilities to tailor your tactics and play style – exploit their agility, speed or strength to wreck and evade rivals with powerful skills and parkour, switch between vehicles or leap onto speeding cars in heart-stopping takeover attempts.
Drive Destruction: A number of basic vehicles will be scattered throughout each arena at the start of every match. But each AllStar also has a personal signature set of wheels that can turn the tide of any battle. Cause enough mayhem to power up your hero vehicle – each one is fuelled with special abilities.
PS5 Technology: Feel every hit, boost, crash and more with the DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and Adaptive Triggers. Benefit from superfast SSD speeds, crisp 4K dynamic resolution, and stunning 360-degree stadium atmospherics with Tempest 3D AudioTech.
Live Service Game: Continually updated, Destruction AllStars is a live service game from SIE with regular season updates featuring everything from new game modes, new characters, skins, emotes and more.
Included with PlayStation Plus: Players with an active PlayStation Plus subscription can download Destruction AllStars for no extra cost.
Wreck your friends: Accelerate the drama and enter 16-player online matches with your friends*. Jump into a Casual quick play session and experience new limited-time rule twists in Special Events.
Destruction AllStars is available today on PlayStation 5, via PS Plus.
