Return of the Obra Dinn, a game Randy finally played and one I've also been wanting to, has been out for a while. A nautical mystery, players seek to find out what happened to the crew of an empty ship belonging to the East India trading company. It's a game full of surprises, and what surprised me was the history behind it.
It was a pleasant surprise then, that History Respawned, a YouTube channel I've posted about before, entered the misty fray that is this game with an episode dedicated to the history behind it.
In this latest episode, host Bob speaks with Meaghan Walker, a doctoral student at the University of Alberta, who "studies the British Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Era" and wrote her masters thesis "on inventories of deceased merchant seafarers". Very appropriate.
The conversation is an interesting look at various aspects of the real-life history behind the game. From the diversity of the crew to the outfits they wear (which is Meaghan's specialty), to even some otherworldly business (which by the way means spoilers).
Check it out.
