Yesterday, Treyarch released a trailer for the Blood of the Dead zombies map releasing in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The map is a re-imagining of a former zombies map released in Black Ops II: Mob of the Dead. The original Mob of the Dead featured an alternate cast of characters, while Blood of the Dead will see the return of the zombies recurring cast: Tank Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and Edward Richtofen.
Zombies has been a staple of Call of Duty for a long time. Ever since it's advent in Call Of Duty: World at War, it's appeared in multiple Call of Duty games, even outside of the Treyarch developed games. Over the years, the zombies mode has developed it's own meta-story around it's central characters, generally found through the extremely complex easter eggs released with recent maps.
I've played a lot of Call of Duty zombies over the years, and completed my fair share of the easter eggs, but this trailer just seems really weird to me. Generally Treyarch leaves the story-building to the characters and the easter eggs themselves, leaving the lore hidden for the truly motivated to find. This trailer seems to focus more on the story than I would have expected, so maybe it's signaling a change in direction for zombies.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 releases on October 12th, and comes with three zombies maps at launch, including Blood of the Dead.
