Breakthrough is Destiny 2's newest competitive game mode

This week, amidst a particularly content-rich weekly reset for Destiny 2, a new crucible game mode called Breakthrough has been added.

In Breakthrough, two teams fight over a center capture point called a breaker. The first team to capture the center point breaks the opponents base, opening another point closer to the enemy base. Once the breaker is captured, the capturing team has two minutes to push into the enemy zone and hack their capture point. Should the attacking team fail to hack the enemy base, the point goes to the defending team. The game is played to three points.

It's an interesting concept, and from what I've seen so far the game looks relatively fun. I had initial concerns about the balance of the game when a team could just give up the breaker knowing they would be able to easily defend and still get a point, but it seems like the heavy ammo economy tends to favor the attacking team in these situations, so it's easier for the attackers to push than I initially thought. Overall, I think it will make a great addition to the Destiny 2 Crucible repertoire.

Breakthrough lives in the competitive playlist so it will continue to be a 4v4 game mode, and will coexist with other competitive game modes such as Countdown, Survival, and Control. Breakthrough also released with three new maps (and one timed-exclusive Playstation map) and is available on the existing Destiny 2 maps as well.
