Dig into all of those menial bodily functions while surviving in SCUM, now in Early Access

Gamepires and Devolver Digital dropped their new survival game into Steam Early Access today for the introductory price of $19.99. The game has been in development for several years, with the team going quiet after the initial announcement. Players will take on the role of a prisoner who has been coerced into taking place in the usual survival reindeer games on a rather sizable island. In addition to the general business of surviving, players can also engage in ongoing PVP “Network Events” (the hook is that the entire island is the subject of a reality show).

What makes SCUM unusual is the unprecedented level of minutia that players can control when managing their character. Eat too much, and you gain weight. Run too far, and you vomit. Go for a while without urinating, and…I don’t know…something bad might happen. Pee pants? If you are the sort of player that finds survival games to be too detail oriented, SCUM might not be the game for you. But if you are the sort that likes to diggy down deep into menu systems that allow you to monitor your character’s sodium levels, then you gotta check this one out.

You can check out the game’s Steam page here. In addition to the base game, you can also kick in another ten bucks for the SCUM Supporter’s Pack “with exclusive in-game items including a handsome skull face tattoo, replica dev team shirt, and a blue bio control unit so people know you spent more when they are looting your lifeless corpse.” The people who wrote the press release are kinda funny.
