Nobody is currently doing adventure games quite like Supermassive. Their breakout title Until Dawn hit a high note that had been a long time coming – playing the game actually felt like watching a movie. Until Dawn used real actors, and ton of atmospheric cinematography and music to create an experience that felt very much like guiding characters through a horror film. The storyline contained enough branching paths that playing through several times could still deliver twisty-turny fun.
Since then, Supermassive has been experimenting in the VR space with Tumble VR, the Until Dawn prequel The Inpatient (and my beloved Rush of Blood), and the military shooter Bravo Team, along with the PlayStation PlayLink title Hidden Agenda.
Now Supermassive seems to be doubling down on the genre that brought them their original success, with the announcement of The Dark Pictures Anthology. The Dark Pictures is a new series of spooky horror-related stand-alone games in the vein of Until Dawn. The first title in The Dark Pictures Anthology will be Man of Medan, a story about a bunch of misguided teens that go looking for a wrecked World War II vessel and end up trapped on a ghost ship. Ghost ship, y’all! Ghost ship!
I’m very excited about this announcement. I’m a bit of a Supermassive fan boy, so I was looking forward to seeing what the company would take on next. I couldn’t be more pleased with the ghost-shippy direction they have chosen.
There is no release date announced yet, but players can expect The Dark Pictures – Man of Medan to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam sometime in 2019.
