Darwin Project, a survival-focused Battle Royale game, has opted to make its Xbox One version free-to-play. The early access version of the game on PC is already free-to-play, so this change brings the Xbox One version more in line with its PC counterpart.
For those of you that had already shelled out the $15 for the game on Xbox One, you'll be receiving a Founder's pack featuring two legendary clothes sets, three legendary axes, three legendary bows, a full jumpsuit collection, and 10 fan gifts. Not too shabby.
For my two cents, I think this is a strong change for Darwin Project. Given the success other games have had using cosmetics models to drive revenue, it's a pretty good choice considering that Darwin Project has an interesting art style that should lend itself well to cosmetics.
In terms of gameplay, Darwin Project is not your traditional Battle Royale. The number of players in each lobby is only ten, so players have less of a field to fight through. The game is focused around crafting and survival, with players having to contend for resources to create weapons and armor, as well as creating sources of warmth to survive the cold. One of the most interesting parts of the game is the Show Director, which puts a player outside the game in control of modifiers which can be used to spice up the match. The Show Director's job is essentially to make the game more interesting, and it even offers Twitch and Mixer integration allowing chats to vote on which modifiers to use.
