Funcom always arrives a little late to the party with Conan—whichever party it happens to be. Age of Conan was an MMORPG, introduced in 2008 during the rise of survival games. And now Conan Exiles, a survival game, is being introduced in 2018 during the rise of the battle royale. I have no doubt that in 10 years, once PUBG and Fortnite have been in full decline for several years, Funcom will finally bring something like a Conan Royale out of early access.
Don't get me wrong: I love survival and I even like crafting, to an extent. I'll always have one or two of those types of games installed in my rig. But Conan Exiles is up against mainstays like Rust and 7 Days to Die. New survival sandboxes aren't launching every other week like they were five years ago. Regardless, Conan Exiles is ready to go for a May 8 launch. It's even trending up on Steam charts. Personally, I dig the Conan aesthetic. It's sexy, it's dirty, it's an amalgamation of a million mythologies. I'm cool with all that. Even if the experience, expectedly, was a bit iffy as it set sail on early access waters over a year ago.
This video tours through the different biomes you'll be surviving and RPG'ing in. There's dessert, river valleys, tundra, lava, swamps, and dungeons. If you are in the mood for a good-looking PvPvE survival experience, you could do worse than Conan Exiles.
