I'm always keeping my eye out for new multiplayer PS VR experiences, so when I saw that Preta: Vendetta Rising is going to release on Thursday, March, I decided to dig a little deeper.
On the Preta game page on PlayStation.com, Preta is described as follows: "Inspired by games such as Dark Souls, Diablo, and Monster Hunters, Preta: Vendetta Rising is designed to be a challenging hack-and-slash action RPG with various multiplayer modes that allows up to two other players to join you in your fight." As there are very few RPG style games on PS VR (Mervils? Kind of?), this game could fill an empty niche on the system.
Preta: Vendetta Rising was released on Steam for Oculus and HTC Vive on July 6, 2017. From the tone of the Steam reviews, it immediately ran into the buzzsaw of players hating on its free-to-play mechanics. Apparently, the game released somewhere in the $30-$40 range, and then quickly hit players with in-app purchases, causing many reviewers to deride the game as "pay-to-win". Most seemed to agree that the game looked and played great, but resented what they considered to be "money gouging" dynamics.
In response, the developers (Illion Games) quickly released a patch on August 28th, removing all in-app purchases (good on them!) and bolstering the matchmaking. The price was also reduced to $19.99, which players seemed to find much more reasonable.
This new version of Preta poised to release on PS VR boasts cross-platform play (always welcome), which implies that the game conforms with the current state of the release on PC. If this is indeed the "new and improved" version of Preta, I am very excited to check it out. My son and I were just saying yesterday that our current VR multiplayer choices were getting a little stale and we need something new. Preta might be just what we need to freshen things up. A good hack-and-slash multiplayer game would look amazing in VR. Throw the multiplayer on top of that, and Preta could easily eat up weekend afternoons with monster-killing goodness.
