What is the Ataribox? The internet has a lot of guesses, and Atari isn't talking.
Whatever it is, you can pre-order it on Dec. 14.
So far, details are extremely sketchy. According to the official Ataribox Facebook page, the new device (funded by an Indiegogo campaign) will be able to stream content from all of the major streaming sites (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) It will be able to play a variety of retro games, and some newer indies. It boasts an "open Linux OS". And it will maybe include the joystick shown below.
I have to admit, I'm intrigued. Like most of my generation, I have a history with Atari, and I always root for them to succeed. But the details are so sparse, I can't really see laying down any cash for this thing. It might be awesome, but I don't buy things that I don't at least have a moderate understanding of. I don't want to jinx Atari by comparing Ataribox to Ouya, but even with Ouya people knew generally what they were getting for their money.
This will be an interesting story to follow. I'll post any further details as they become available.
