Round up your posse, it's a free play weekend for Squad!

More On: Squad

Squad is a game I've been keeping an eye on. It's description sounds a lot like ArmA:

Squad is a 50 vs 50 multiplayer first-person shooter that aims to capture combat realism through communication and teamplay. Major features include vehicle-based combined arms gameplay, large scale environments, base building, and integrated positional VoIP for proximity talking & radio.

It's reviewing on Steam positively for the most part, although there are some thumbs-down from players that suffered crashes and one or two that hate on it because it has the same "flaws" as ArmA: it takes too long to get anywhere, and it's too hard. Fair enough, I suppose, but that's the beauty of a free weekend: it's no risk. Although to be fair, Squad is also reportedly similar to ArmA in another aspect: the quality of your playing experience is going to be greatly influenced by who you're playing with; these are not lone-wolf games. Get in a good squad with a good leader and you're going to have a better experience. The problem is that a single weekend is probably not enough time to get a very good feel for that kind of thing, and free weekend's also tend to bring in wreckers.

Personally, I'm going to give it a try. The freeness has already started and runs through the rest of the weekend. You can get to the Steam store page with this handy link.

Good luck on the battlefield!
