Well it seems that Mario will miss the launch of yet another Nintendo console, and this time it's the Switch. Super Mario Odyssey is planned for a holiday 2017 launch window and sees the return to a Mario 64-style open world platformer, as opposed to the more traditional style of Mario 3D World and the crazy abstractness of Mario Galaxy. The game features Mario taking a trip out of the Mushroom Kingdom...and into the real world.
That's right, the plucky plumber will be exploring real cities and interacting with realistic-looking people. This is giving me unpleasant flashbacks to Sonic 2006, where Sonic and pals had awkward, incongruous conversations with normal-sized people, so it remains to be seen how this shift will work for Mario. That said I'm really excited to have a more exploration-based Mario game, and the hat with the eyes...well, I'll get back to you on that. See Super Mario Odyssey for yourself in the trailer below.
