Where have all the god games gone? The Universim says, "Hi."

More On: The Universim

Where have all the god games gone? Well, The Universim is doing its part to bring back the spirit of that decades-old genre—which is one of my favorite long-lost genres, by the way. Despite the painfully dull name, The Universim wants to do a lot of things that I want to do. It wants to take you from the Stone Age to the Space Age. It wants to do it on randomly generated planets. And it wants to inform you, not so politely, that you aren't the only spacefaring race in the galaxy.

The world's AI (the flora and the fauna, I'm guessing) reacts beautifully and brutally to your exploring, expanding existence. Is there even a way to exist in perfect harmony on your own planet? The Mother Earth-like narrator hoped there was, at one point. But she also sounds resigned to the fact that you're going to exploit every resource available, mining for minerals and drilling for oil, until Mother Earth gets tired of your crap and sends natural disasters your way. You'll defend yourself from attacks both terrestrial and extraterrestrial.

The Universim is coming soon to PC.
