E3 2015: Mutant Mudds Super Challenge

Continuing with our look at the Nindie@Home demos this week we have Mutant Mudds Super Challenge.  When I first saw the original Mutant Mudds I ended up picking it up and giving it a shot as I'm a sucker for retro-style platformers...and I loved every minute of it.  When I got the opportunity to review some of the Nindie@Home demos this week, I jumped at the chance to check out the sequel...and I loved every minute of it.

The goal in the demo of Mutant Mudds Super Challenge is to just clear three different stages labeled as 1-1, 3-1, 6-?, representing stages seen throughout the game.  Each stage has one hundred small emblems to collect on your way to collect the big emblem at the end of the stage.  You only have a small gun and a jetpack at your disposal to clear out enemies and work your way through the stages.  Most of the small emblems are out in the open while others are hidden away in secret passages in the walls, but it's not required to collect all of them to clear a stage.  While progressing through the stages you have arrows that take you further into the foreground or background and sometimes you have to time your transitions to make sure you don't collide with an enemy when you transfer to the background or foreground.

New to Super Challenge are bosses and you get to fight one of them in the 6-? door, a giant ghost.  I'm not sure if all bosses will be like this, but ghosts in general can only be killed with a special gun, and even then it only keeps them away for a few moments before they come back.  The goal of the boss fight is to navigate an area in the background using the special weapon, but leave at least one shot out of your ten for the boss itself.  Once you make it back to the foreground, fire at the boss to reveal its heart, then shoot the heart.  Repeat two more times and you're done.  It's a nice addition to the game and I really enjoyed my time with the demo.  If you're into retro-style platformers, especially if you enjoyed the original Mutant Mudds, you'll definitely want to try out Mutant Mudds Super Challenge.
