Gamefly and Amazon attempt to do what Onlive couldn’t

Even though Onlive has come and gone, the dream of playing games through the cloud lives on. Gamefly and Amazon have officially pushed forward with the dream and have launched Gamefly Streaming on Amazon’s Fire TV boxes. The service gives players the ability to play an assortment of games right in their living room by simply subscribing to the service and attaching a control pad to their Fire TV.

There are currently 35 games available through the service, although you can’t exactly pick an individual game and begin playing. You can’t pick specific titles as they are all offered in various bundles, including a LEGO themed grouping as well as an Action Pack. The packs will cost you $6.99 for a month of access (with roughly 7 games), or $9.99 for an expanded pack with 16 games. You can use a variety of supported controllers, including the Xbox 360 controller and you will want to have at least 10mb of download speed through your Internet provider.

Hopefully the servie fairs better than Onlive did. I reviewed the original Microconsole back in December of 2011 and was really impressed with the potential of the technology. Unfortunately, Onlive was unable to improve their offering over time and it eventually fizzled out, forcing them to finally close their doors a few months back.

The service is now available through the Fire TV’s app store and Gamefly promises that more games are coming soon.
