Sword Coast Legends—yes, the Sword Coast is part of Dungeons & Dragons' venerable Forgotten Realms universe—is doing something unprecedented. They're taking the party-based role-playing game formula and adding a live dungeon master to the game. I know!
Sword Coast Legends is a one- to four-player RPG, where one of the players is a DM in the game's Dungeon Master Mode. It's crazy just picturing it.
Catch the developers on a Twitch livestream today, Mar. 26, at 3:00 P.M. Eastern (noon Pacific).
On a sidenote, as the video below points out (at least to me), Sword Coast Legends falls into the trap of Same-y McSameWrap architecture and character design. It can be tough to visually aquaint yourself with an area—especially an urban area—when the only thing distinguishing, say, a tavern from a blacksmith is seeing a tiny guy swaying on his feet in front of a tavern. I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean.
There's also the strange visual disconnect of buildings being way bigger on the inside than on the outside. This "TARDIS Effect" is, I'm sure, great for reducing player claustrophobia, and it's got to be a big help in pathfinding. Regardless, it's an immersion killer for me. Don't let my 3D-isometric-camera hate stop you from enjoying these lovely visuals, though.
And don't let me stop you from enjoying the rather chatty character party. These guys are filling up the downtime with a good amount of dialogue. They're going HAM on their voice acting, too.
Props to the video's narrator for saying that the party's search has come to an "undead end."
Sword Coast Legends will likely be PC only, with a Q3 2015 launch window.
