Forty-two years ago, Ralph Baer invented the first video game console, the Magnavox Odyssey. He died this week at the age of 92. And the Oculus Rift is still in development, but the Samsung Gear VR is here today.
What are you playing this weekend?

After sinking most of last Saturday into Pokemon Omega Ruby, I was hoping to have my review finished this past weekend. Unfortunately I came down with the cold and had to take a break from my adventure through the Hoenn Region, so this weekend will see me finishing that up. I'm also hoping to get some more time with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow as its the first 3D Castlevania game I've actually enjoyed.

With the announcement of 007 Spectre I'm on sort of a James Bond kick. I just finished Quantum of Solace (great film, meh game) and Blood Stone (better than I remembered, but not by much) and I'll be moving on to the undisputed king of modern Bond games, GoldenEye: Reloaded. I just picked up a PS3 Move on the cheap, specifically for that game, so I hope it's closer to the Wii version's controls than the 360 version was.

This weekend I will probably be finishing my co-op playthrough of Dark Souls, which has been going on for months due to the sometimes iffy summoning system. Once that's through, it's likely back to GTA V on the Xbox One and committing various acts of debauchery in razor-sharp HD.

This is going to be a weekend dedicated to Destiny. With the new Dark Below expansion, I am really feeling the need to dig back into the game, although I will hate to take a break from Dragon Age: Inquisition in order to do so. I was just getting comfortable in that world. Anyways, I'd sort of stalled out at level 26 in Destiny, but now begins the push to level 32 and to tackle both of the major raids, both the Vault of Glass and the new one with the new expansion.

This weekend will be all about the ABC's of Dragon Age: Inquisition...that's right—Always Be Closing (rifts). I just hit the point in the game where it says to you, "You know how you thought you had found most of the stuff in the game? Well, here's twice as much stuff that you didn't know about. Go have fun." The game is a stark reminder of how good video games can be, despite having a host of technical issues and quirks.

I restarted Dragon Age: Inquisition 10 or 11 times, trying to figure out which race, gender, and class I'd be spending the next hundred hours with. I thought it'd be my Qunari mage, but BioWare forgot to render the battlemage armor in a Qunari's bulky frame. So, instead of running around in my Long Johns, I'm now hitting up the Hinterlands with an English-accented woman packing a penchant for two-fisted weapons.

While everyone else is apparently playing Dragon Age: Inquisition and Destiny, I'm going to continue living in the stark, barren world of This War of Mine. You think life is hard when you lose a raid member in the middle of the Vault of Glass? Try losing your best scavenger to a trigger-happy soldier because you needed just one more piece of scrap to build a water filter. Sorry gang, guess we're not eating today.

Last weekend I'd decided that I did want to shoot things. I spent it blasting through the single-player campaign in Killzone: Shadowfall. This weekend will be spent lopping off orc heads in Shadows of Mordor. I even watched the Desolation of Smaug on Netflix yesterday to get me in the mood. I'll also be pushing UC Dublin on to glory in FIFA 15 and puting in some time with Hearthstone's new Goblins and Gnomes expansion.

For me, it's a matter of strategically choosing what to play this weekend. I took advantage of the buy-two-get-one-free sale and walked away with Destiny, GTA V, and Far Cry 4. I also grabbed Suikoden 2 on PSN (which everyone with a Vita should do right now), and I've got leveling to do for my paladin on Final Fantasy XIV. Oh, and I'm finally putting Ar Nosurge to bed this weekend.
