Laptops have some pretty good CPUs and some solid GPUs, but nothing's going to match the power of a high end desktop graphics card. What if you could use that graphics card on your laptop though?
That's what Alienware will allow you to do with their Alienware Graphics Amplifier. This external box will let you plug in a PCI-E video card 375W and under. From there, just connect it to your compatible Alienware laptop and your games will run off the that video card rather than the internal card on your computer.
It's definitely not new technology as I used to use a dock for an old Dell laptop that allowed you to plug in an external video card. It was pretty slick and I'm surprised that the option kind of died out.
The problem with the Amplifier though is that it will only work with certain Alienware laptops. That's because it uses a proprietary connector that's currently in the latest Alienware 13 model and nothing more.
Of course, Alienware has every right to make this feature only available for their line of computers, but man I'd love to have this paired up with a laptop or even one of the new Intel Core M tablets and get some gaming performance out of it. It's a shame really, but let's hope that this technology becomes available for more laptops in the future.
If you're interested, it'll set you back $299 and as I mentioned earlier, only the new Alienware 13 laptop can utilize it. Com'on Alienware and produce one for any laptop out there and make a killing.
