One of the first games I had for my Apple //e was Lode Runner, a game where you tried to collect gold and avoid capture by guards who were constantly chasing you. The hook of the game was that you could dig holes in the ground in places to incapacitate the guards or to access other parts of the level. The graphics were pretty basic and while it wasn't a super complex game but it was a lot of fun. Lode Runner was also one of the first games to include a level editor to extend gameplay past what was shipped in the box.
I bring this up because the game's creator Douglas E Smith passed away over the weekend. The game has been remade more than a few times and the core concepts can be seen in a lot of modern day games.
