Disney was going to go the free to play route with the dogfighting offering, Star Wars: Attack Squadrons. They had a closed beta to test out how the game would do. Sadly, it looks like the powers that be saw the game as not being enough fun or profitable as they have ceased development on it.
A posting on their Facebook page as well as their website has this following message:
We want to thank all of the fans who participated in the closed beta of Star Wars: Attack Squadrons.
After much consideration, we have decided to cease development so that we can focus on other
Star Wars game experiences. We truly appreciate the time you spent engaging in the beta.
So as with a few other games in the Star Wars world that were announced in the past few years, Attack Squadrons is cancelled. It's a shame as I've been wanting a game to satisfy my X-Wing Alliance craving, but I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer for dog fights in the Star Wars universe.
