I'll build whatever I wanna build on my own floating island in Windborne

More On: Windborne
There's exactly one piece of concept art on the official website and only a few paragraphs' worth of info, but I'm already intrigued. Windborne is an MMO that's more about building up than tearing down, where you can construct anything (we'll see about that) and where everything you make has purpose (we'll see about that, too).

While EverQuest Next is currently blowing my mind with its Minecraft-in-Norrath approach, I'm not discounting Windborne's similar approach. Windborne promises procedurally drawn islands populated with player-made creations, the opportunity to make nice with passing people or exploiting neighboring resources, and the ability to mount assaults on "copies" of your friends' island defenses. Developer Hidden Path made Defense Grid, so they've already been around the block with tower defense games; it's possible that design experience will inform combat action on players' floating islands.

This one's making an audible ping on my sandbox gaming radar, so I'll keep an eye out for actual in-game screenshots and gameplay videos. Windborne is looking for a PC release sometime in the first half of 2014.

Catch the Wind with Hidden Path Entertainment
The Independent Developer Announces Its Second Self-published Title, Windborne

Bellevue, WA (August 6, 2013) – Hidden Path Entertainment announces that it is self-publishing its second title, Windborne. Windborne is set to release in the first half of 2014. This news comes not long after the company announced it will be self-publishing DG2, Defense Grid 2, in the first half of 2014 as well. Hidden Path is showing its diversity with Windborne.

Windborne takes the company into a new genre and brings social sandbox creation games to the next level.  Players will explore a vibrant world filled with secrets to unlock and treasures to find, craft personalized furnishings and innovative artifacts, and befriend intriguing Jin to help build a new civilization.

Hidden Path’s Michael Austin, Chief Technology Officer, shares his enthusiasm for Windborne, “I don't think I've ever been so giddy working on a project. I find myself just grinning at the screen instead of actually working on the game, wandering around the world watching our creatures or exploring the cool things that the procedural system made." Austin gives more detail, "Our vision with Windborne is both simple and enormously complex at the same time. We want to make a Miyazaki-style Disneyland of creative sandbox worlds- an infinite number of dense, exciting islands to explore with your friends, full of high adventure, where it's up to you to decide what to do. I hope you'll join us in Steam Early Access later this year!"

Gamers will be able to get their hands on the game at this year’s PAX Prime in Seattle, WA. Be sure to come by booth #3330 August 30th–September 2nd 2013 and explore Windborne. Will you seek out the clues and artifacts of the ancients, or just loot passing islands for minerals and rare plants?  Bring along your friends while you play, and share your creations with the world.  Where will the wind take you?
