Earlier this morning
Joystiq reported that Capcom announced the cancellation of
Mega Man Universe on the official Japanese web site of the game. For those who don't know
Mega Man Universe is a do-it-yourself Mega Man game in which gamers can make their own stages inspired by Mega Man 2 (or at least that's what I've seen) and play the game using various versions of the classic blue bomber, including the version from the infamous NES box art from Mega Man 1. According to Joystiq the decision to cancel the game was given under "various circumstances", which could involve the departure of Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune who left Capcom this past October. Joystick has requested further comment from Capcom and I'll be keeping an eye out for it, but I kind of have this inkling feeling inside me.
For those unaware take a look at the bottom-right corner of your PC. See that little clock down there? Note how it shows 3/31/2011? Yeah, guess what tomorrow is? Japan is 13 - 16 hours ahead of us depending on your time zone (I'm in EST or EDST or whatever it's known as now since it's Daylight Savings Time) so right now they're only a few hours away from April 1st. It would not surprise me in the least if this is just an elaborate April Fool's joke on Mega Man fans. Then again the fact that Keiji Inafune left Capcom could also make this a true story. Personally as a Mega Man fan I'm hoping that this is just a April Fool's joke. If it's not though I hope this also doesn't spell the end for Mega Man Legends 3 as well.
