Japanese developer Miracle Kidz has announced that it is currently in the process of developing a new River City Ransom title. The original game, known as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari in Japan, was released over 20 years ago and remains a title atop many “best of” lists from that generation.
River City Ransom 2, which is being planned for both the PC and home consoles, is being developed by a team that includes some of the staff who were on the dev team for the original title. The game is very early in development but on track for a 2012 release in Japan. Nothing has been announced regarding a release outside of Japan... yet.
I was always a huge fan of the original game and its later release(s) on the Gameboy Advance. River City Ransom was unusually deep for its genre (beat ‘em up) and still holds up today, so I am curious to see what they can come up with using modern technology. The title will likely result in a digitally distributed game rather than a full retail release but that is purely my speculation... I will be keeping an eye on this one.
