If you caught the video that we posted yesterday of Cliffy B’s Gears of War 3 segment of the Microsoft press conference, or watched the presser in general, you will notice that he referenced an all new mode for the game at the very end. The new mode, which made its debut at E3, is entitled Beast Mode.

Beast Mode is a new multiplayer mode for Gears of War 3, which launches next April. The new mode allows players to take control of the various Locust creatures that they have been facing in the previous games. Players can be spawned as one of many different Locusts including Tickers, Boomers, and even Berserkers.

The new mode is based loosely on traditional class based gameplay mechanics. Every Locust character has a specific role to fulfill, like the Kantus which can resurrect fallen partners. The mode will also require some time and dedication to get the most out of it as well, as players will have to rank up in order to gain access to the deadlier Locust characters in the game.

It is funny how all of the games now days seamlessly borrow concepts form one another. Gears of War 2‘s Horde mode spawned a ton of variations in FPS games for the following year... and now Gears of War 3‘s Beast Mode sounds a lot to me like the Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 mode(s) that allowed you to play as the infected. Either way, it sounds fun to me, regardless of who started it...
