Right now, you can
sign up to be one of 300 to receive a
Steam Machine prototype. So what does a Steam Machine prototype entail? Looks like it's going to be some pretty powerful hardware.
Valve
has given details on what the machines will have internally. Not all prototypes will be the same, but they are all going to be good gaming machines. Some will be the best of the best components out there. What will they have you ask? How about:
The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)
Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD
Power Supply: Internal 450w 80Plus Gold
Dimensions: approx. 12 x 12.4 x 2.9 in high
Yeah, you might be lucky enough to own one with an Intel i7-4770 with a NVIDIA Titan GPU. The CPU costs about $300 while the Titan sets you back $1000. Just those two components alone will net you an Xbox One, a PlayStation 4, a Wii U, and some games.
Storage wise, it looks like the Steam Machine is going with a
Seagate Hybrid like drive featuring a combo of traditional platter setup paired with some flash memory. I've got a few of these in my machines where I need some of the speed of an SSD but the capacity of a hard drive without breaking the bank.
Overall, the systems look to have some impressive components and I bet there are going to be a lot more trying to sign up to get one now that they know what the machine can entail.
