Although the Flappy Bird saga is over, it still remains in the hearts and on the minds of many fans and developers. After the game was removed from the App Store many indie developers set off to make their own spin-offs for a Flappy Bird game jam called "Flappy Jam". Many different versions of the game have been created, but my favorite so far is Terry Cavanagh's Maverick Bird. Cavanagh is well known for making difficult games such as Super Hexagon and VVVVVV and he brings that legacy to Maverick Bird as well. Much like Flappy Bird you are an object flying through small gaps between two pillars, gaining one point for each gap you clear. Maverick Bird ups the challenge with higher speed, and adds the ability to dive at any moment if you have flapped too high. You will also have to clear special obstacles after every few gaps, keeping the challenge from feeling too monotonous.
If you liked Flappy Bird, but are looking for something a little more challenging, Maverick Bird is probably right up your alley. As of writing my high score is 67. Can you beat it? Let me know in the comments!
