TechCrunch has confirmed with Amazon on a report that they have picked up game development firm Double Helix. Double Helix is home of 75 employees and their most recent game was Killer Instinct on the Xbox One.
Could this lead to a console by Amazon that some rumors are floating around? The talk is Amazon would product an Android based console to compete with the likes of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so it wouldn't be a micro-console type product such as the Ouya.
With Android being able to run on x86 processors recently (Dell Venue 8 is an Intel Atom processor tablet that runs Android), Amazon could develop hardware that has some good power behind it on the CPU side at least.
Amazon producing their own gaming console is an intriguing thought. They certainly have the infrastructure and ecosystem to provide a good store to purchase games. They definitely have the capital to pull this off.
Double Helix is a company with some good veterans in the midst. They have some hits and misses, but they can produce a good quality title. Their next title, Strider, is still on track but Harker has been cancelled.
