When gaming on a competitive level, it is no secret that your choice of tools can make all of the difference in the world. Peripheral maker Razer is always ready to step up and provide for PC gamers and that is exactly what they have done with their new Razer Naga Hex Gaming Mouse. Sleek, comfortable, and packed with features to give you the competitive edge, the Naga Hex is one impressive mouse which will help you take your action-RPG games to the next level.

What sets this mouse apart from other mice on the market? First off, the mouse features a 5600dpi 3.5G laser sensor, which makes the response time miniscule. Even the slightest movement of the mouse registers on your pointer / cursor; I even found the default settings to be too responsive and had to use the Windows option to slow it down a bit for my non-gaming usage. The response time is lowered even more by the high quality, wired connection. The same braided cord design that Razer uses with its other products is used here as well, ensuring a nice, reliable connection to your PC. Don’t worry about the fact that it is corded; the length of the cord is about 6.5 feet, giving you plenty of length to keep it from feeling restrictive.

The physical design of the Naga Hex may be one of the, if not the, best mouse design that I have ever laid my hands upon. The contoured body fits the natural lay of my hand and my fingers perfectly, allowing my hand to basically lay at rest during operation. The biggest aspect of the design would probably be the ledge on the right side of the mouse used for resting your right-ring finger; it lays at a near perfect angle that allows both your finger to lay on its surface while still providing you with the leverage to grip the side of the mouse for movement. It feels very natural and comfortable while giving you complete control; it is damn near perfect.

The physical design is complimented by the sleek visual features as well. The top half of the mouse feature a hard, smooth plastic material with a marble-green paint job; the green used is extremely dark, making it only noticeable in the right lighting, which gives it a visual “pop”. The bottom half and the sides of the mouse are constructed with a softer, matte-black design that that creates a great dynamic versus the top half. All of this is highlighted by the subtle green backlighting that makes the scroll wheel, thumb button, and Razer logo stand out in low-light situations. The Naga Hex also has a nice “heft” to it; considering that it weighs just less than half a pound, it really gives a good sense of presence in your hand.

What truly sets the Naga Hex apart, design wise, is the inclusion of 6 mechanical thumb buttons on the left side of the mouse. Designed to give you an edge in MOBO and action-RPG games, the 6 super-responsive buttons serve as quick access to the numbers 1 through 6 on the keyboard which you are commonly used for shortcuts in these genres. A simple switch of a button on the bottom of the mouse dictates whether they serve as the numbers from the actual number row at the top of the keyboard or the keypad traditionally placed on the right side. The buttons are arranged in a hexagonal pattern around an interchangeable thumb rest. There are three different ones included in the pack which you can change out at your will; change the small pad will simply alter the height at which your thumb rests above the buttons.

Just like the rest of the buttons on the mouse, the side buttons utilize the same mechanical switch technology that powers the other 5 buttons on the mouse, making them super responsive compared to the membrane switch that most mice use. The mechanical design allows users to enter rapid clicks with little to no error in detection; these buttons are rated to recognize up to 250 clicks per minute and reliable up to 10 million clicks; needless to say, you shouldn’t have any issues with their responsiveness.

Razer has also included support for their Razer Synapse 2.0 cloud storage software. What this means is that all of your personal settings for the mouse are stored in the company’s cloud server, meaning that it will work the way you want it to wherever you use it (as long as you have an Internet connection of course). The service also automatically keeps the mouse’s drivers and firmware up to date without you ever having to worry about it; it will always be powered by the latest revisions of both to ensure top performance at all times.

Performance wise, I have absolutely zero complaints about the Naga Hex. After spending a couple of hours in numerous games such as World of Warcraft, Titan Quest, Diablo II, and Torchlight, this specialized design truly helps to enhance the experience of the action-RPG genre. The side keys of the Hex quickly become almost second nature and I cannot imagine playing these types of games without them.

If there is anything that I could change about the mouse, I would add a hardware ability to slow the movement speed down. If Razer had included something similar to what I experienced with the SteelSeries Xai, which enabled me to switch between a gaming and normal usage mode on the fly, this would have been a flawless experience in my book. That is truly a small gripe though and I am quickly adapting to the quick reaction of the cursor for non-gaming experiences.

All things considered, I find the Razer Naga Hex to be one of the best mice I have ever used. It’s super comfortable, extremely responsive, and it just plain looks gorgeous. Although it is designed specifically to enhance the action-RPG experience, the side buttons have application in many genres. The inclusion of 6 extra mouse buttons may sound like a lot, but they are perfectly implemented here and have become a feature that I don’t want to game without.

The Naga Hex is an awesome piece of hardware. It is extremely comfortable and super-responsive. The side buttons are incredibly useful in games like WoW and Torchlight; I can’t imagine playing similar games without them now.

Guess who's back!!! If you have been here before, you know the basics: lifelong gamer, father, and of course, former certified news monkey. I still consider myself all of those things, just maybe not in the grand scale that I once did. I’ve been blogging on the industry for more than decade now, in some form or another. It wasn't until I landed here at Gaming Nexus that I really dove in head first. Now, writing about games has become what I do for fun (and sometimes work) and something I intend on doing until the day I die (in some form or another).

I'm a huge fan of just about everything you can interact with using a controller, no matter how old or new, good or bad. If you put it in front of me, I will play it (at least once).
