It's been four years since
Star Fox Command came out in '06, and while it was a good DS game fans really want a new entry. Hideki Kamiya of Platinum Games (Madworld, Infinite Space, Vanquish) thinks it's been too long and really wants to make a new Star Fox game. Like,
really wants to, like wishes he was threatened into making one. Check out this quote:
"I want someone from Nintendo to come to Platinum, point a gun and say, 'You people make the the new Star Fox game.'"
Yikes. I guess he seriously likes his Star Fox. I admit to being a fan myself and wouldn't mind seeing the series take a space combat/exploration sandbox route. People like to hate on Rare's
Star Fox Adventures but I thought it was a decent Zelda clone, especially considering it didn't start out as a Star Fox game and the fantasy theme kind of clashed with Star Fox's goofy scifi setting. The following game,
Star Fox Assault catches a lot of flack for its on-foot missions and arcade feel but I though it was pretty underrated. It had some good ideas, a great multiplayer and just needed some polish, and its production values were fantastic--it had one of the best orchestral game scores in recent memory.
That said the series has lost its way and needs a visionary developer to give it new direction. The people at Platinum are mostly ex-Clover studios devs and I'd love to see what they'd do with Fox and his gang, especially after the skill they demonstrated with the galaxy-spanning DS RPG Infinite Space. It wouldn't be out of sorts for a third party to handle a new Star Fox either--Nintendo hasn't made a Star Fox game since the legendary Star Fox 64. Rare made Adventures, Capcom made Assault and Q Games made Command, and with Team Ninja working on Metroid Other M Nintendo apparently doesn't have reservations about third parties experimenting with their core franchises.
The image I have in my head of Shigeru Miyamoto menacing Kamiya with a .45 is a funny one, but if that's what it takes, so be it. Fox is long over due for some barrel rolls and he hasn't used bombs wisely in years.
