The Internet is in a rage over the news of an installment of 22 Wii consoles at the Broadmoor Hospital. Broadmoor Hospital houses several of England’s more famous criminals, including the Yorkshire Ripper (Peter Sutcliffe) who was last seen playing ten-pin bowling.
The £5,000 expense, on taxpayers’ shoulders of course, is quoted as a means to help with the treatment and, with Wii Fit, exercise for patients at Broadmoor Hospital.
However, a source at the hospital in Berkshire gave their thoughts on the new addition: “When you think of their crimes and the misery they have caused, you have to ask if it’s right for society to pay to entertain them.”
This is the kind of common sentiment one generally hears when this type of story surfaces itself. The idea is this image of serial killers being rewarded with matching pajamas and a Wii-filled slumber party. Obviously, that image is so far removed from reality that this is clearly just another sensationalist non-story that makes for little more than fun headlines.
Its relevancy to gamers? Well, other than the fact that a Nintendo Wii was involved, the Yorkshire Ripper sure does look like a Wolfman/Kevin Smith hybrid, doesn’t he?
I’m thinking as long as the hospital sticks to games like Wii Fit, and not Nintendo’s new “Escape from Broadmoor Hospital 2: Revenge on the Video Game Writer who compared you to Kevin Smith”, we’ll all be fine.
