More On:

We've finally got word on the next generation NVIDIA card. At NVIDIA's press event this evening, CEO Jen-Hsun Huang announced the GeForce GTX 1080. If what he says it's true, this could be an incredible card.

Mr. Huang said the card is twice as fast as a Titan X. That's right, it's going to be twice as powerful as a $1000 card and be three times more energy efficient. So, not only are you getting an incredibly powerful card, it's going to be smart on using electricity too.

We're talking 2560 CUDA cores running at 1607MHz with a boost to 1733MHz. 8GB of GDDR5X running at 10Gpbs and it only has a single 8-pin power connector.

Two years n the making and using several billion dollars in research and development, this card sounds like it's going to be a monster and a prime candidate for VR sets such as the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.

As an owner of an HTC Vive, I can't wait to get my hands on this card to try it out for both regular gaming and VR gaming. Hopefully, the card will be available soon and that it won't be TOO expensive. But, we know flagship cards from NVIDIA can cost a pretty penny initially. Still, the way the GTX 1080 sounds has my blood pumping thinking about the performance i can get in VR games.

-Update- The pricing and release dates have been revealed. The GeForce GTX 1080 will be on sale on May 27th for $599. A "founders edition", which looks to have a different cooler, will run $699. For the GeForce GTX 1070, it will be $379 come June 10th with a "founders edition" running $449. Oh, the GeForce GTX 1070 will be faster than the Titan X as well.
