DisplayPort 1.4a announced

Today, a new standard was announced for DisplayPort. DisplayPort 1.4a will increase the bandwidth allowing for up to 32.4GB/s of information to be passed to the screen.

What does this have to do with gaming? Well, for those who love the highest frame rate possible and refresh rates, this will allow 4K displays to run at 120Hz. Currently, the limit is 60Hz for 4K resolutions, which means the screen can refresh at a maximum of 60 times per second. With 120Hz at 4K resolution, you're going to get super buttery high frame rates at very high resolutions.

The standard will also OEMS to build 8K displays, which seems like an overkill to me. In any case, I can't wait for video cards and monitors to support this new standard as the refresh rate was what was really holding me back in jumping up to 4K.
