Konami isn't going to sit idly by while
Left 4 Dead continues to play keep-away with the survival-horror co-op crown. In fact, if you ask them, Konami
invented survival-horror.* But they're going to try and bring it back as a downloadable title through XBLA and PSN. It's the
Zombie Apocalypse, and you are one of four characters (in four-player co-op) that bear a startling resemblance to the characters in
L4D. You've got the cute girl, the white collar guy, the old military codger, and ... well,
Zombie Apocalypse replaces the biker with an IT geek, from the looks of things, but that's about as far as they're willing to stretch our imaginations. Oh, and the white collar guy isn't black in this one.
"Konami is committed to providing original, quality entertainment," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami, as he handed a bonus check to the guy that brainstormed the above changes to
L4D's formula.
They didn't name their characters Francis, Bill, Zoey, and Louis, but it's pretty obvious that coming up with something "original" wasn't exactly scribbled onto the drawing board. Unless zooming the camera back to an isometric view counts. Which, to clarify, it
doesn't. At least it's a dual-stick shooter, so there's a world of differentiation to be had there. Apparently, the zenith of their marketing scheme was to simply get something (anything!) out there as fast as possible with the word "zombie" somewhere in the title.
Zombie Apocalypse should be hitting XBLA and PSN before July of this year.
* Konami cannot back that statement up in paper.
