Konami isn't going to sit idly by while Left 4 Dead
continues to play keep-away with the survival-horror co-op crown. In fact, if you ask them, Konami invented
survival-horror.* But they're going to try and bring it back as a downloadable title through XBLA and PSN. It's the Zombie Apocalypse
, and you are one of four characters (in four-player co-op) that bear a startling resemblance to the characters in L4D
. You've got the cute girl, the white collar guy, the old military codger, and ... well, Zombie Apocalypse
replaces the biker with an IT geek, from the looks of things, but that's about as far as they're willing to stretch our imaginations. Oh, and the white collar guy isn't black in this one.
"Konami is committed to providing original, quality entertainment," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami, as he handed a bonus check to the guy that brainstormed the above changes to L4D
They didn't name their characters Francis, Bill, Zoey, and Louis, but it's pretty obvious that coming up with something "original" wasn't exactly scribbled onto the drawing board. Unless zooming the camera back to an isometric view counts. Which, to clarify, it doesn't
. At least it's a dual-stick shooter, so there's a world of differentiation to be had there. Apparently, the zenith of their marketing scheme was to simply get something (anything!) out there as fast as possible with the word "zombie" somewhere in the title.
should be hitting XBLA and PSN before July of this year.
* Konami cannot back that statement up in paper.
KONAMI ANNOUNCES ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE FOR XBOX LIVE®ARCADE AND PLAYSTATION®NETWORK
Gamers Defend the Human Race Against Zombie Attacks in
Upcoming Downloadable Game
LOS ANGELES - April 13, 2009 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today announced Zombie Apocalypse, an upcoming downloadable game for Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation®Network. As heavily equipped gunslingers, Zombie Apocalypse sets players on a mission to destroy as many zombies as possible in order save the last remaining human survivors.
Using an array of up to 11 lethal weapons including assault rifles, flame throwers and a teddy bear filled with C4 explosives, up to four players can play locally or via the Internet to stop the zombie attacks and rescue survivors as they compete for the highest scores. Players can use a chainsaw to melee zombies and protect themselves against becoming one of the undead. As an added line of defense, players can also use environmental hazards to crush, burn, slice, or cause other types of destruction on the masses of zombies.
"Konami is committed to providing original, quality entertainment through our diverse offering of console, handheld and downloadable content," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. "As a downloadable title, Zombie Apocalypse delivers all the fun and action of a console game at a fraction of the cost."
The action-packed, arcade-style shooter will test gamers' dual analog stick shooting skills and ability to survive 55 days of battles across seven environments, all the while attempting to not become a brainless zombie. Upon completing the mission, players can re-live the apocalypse with seven challenging unlockable game modes.
Zombie Apocalypse will be available in Q2 2009.
