If
Age of Conan is rated M for Mature, then they certainly know how to put the "M" in "Mmmmmm."
One year and 1.2 million copies later,
Age of Conan is officially celebrating its first birthday. I'm not even going to lie -- after that initial flash in the pan it made last May, I had no faith that Funcom's Robert E. Howard venture would survive even this long. My copy has been sitting on my shelf since launch day, simply because my computer (which has run many a game since
just fine, thank you very much) just didn't -- and still doesn't -- have the stones to bring the Hyborian world to life in anything faster than 12 frames per second.
But, VP of Sales and Marketing at Funcom Morten Larsen stands behind the claim that Funcom is "seeing a significant increase in players and new customers per month." And while they're being coy and not revealing any hard numbers (pretty much no MMO does), the 7-day free trial is certainly a contributor, as accounts ramp in number and, indeed,
Age of Conan hangs onto some of those precious trial members and converts them into full memberships.
In game, players will be treated to free fireworks this week, and a screenshot contest is underway to win some "exciting prizes." Additional character slots will soon be available for purchase -- which is testament to either an exciting variety of character classes to choose from, or a purported lack of endgame content. Quite possibly it's a little bit of both, stirred in with the expected fickleness of MMO players that just can't sit still in their chairs and stick with any one avatar.
To the 120 Funcom employees still working day in and day out to maintain
Age of Conan -- congratulations. Never thought we'd see you here.
