Retro-style shooter Nightmare Reaper has gone up for sale on Steam early access today, and if you but it now you can get it for $16.14, which is 15% off. The early access release includes the game's first episode, which features 32 weapons from the game's expansive arsenal and numerous pulse-pounding, procedurally-generated levels to shred your way through.
Developed by indie studio Blazing Bit Games, Nightmare Reaper is an old-school FPS that takes inspiration from Wolfenstein 3D, Heretic and Doom. As a psychiatric patient committed to an asylum, your sleep is plagued by nightmares of murder mazes and relentless monsters. You're literally killing your inner demons in this game, which is a pretty radical premise. In-between levels you can power up your character by playing an interactive skill tree mini-game, which plays out like a classic 8-bit platformer.
I just wrapped up my review of the early access episode so stay tuned for my full thoughts, but in brief I had a lot of fun with Nightmare Reaper. Its sense of style, unique plot and tense FPS gameplay offset any of the early access jitters that it's still working out. I also love the low-res art style and its dedication to that nostalgic 16-bit aesthetic. I'm looking forward to see how the game evolves as the developers shepherd it toward full release, but for now I definitely recommend checking out the first episode.
