A few weeks ago, NVIDIA's latest line of video cards hit the market and one of the big features was real time ray tracing. But, Windows needed to be updated to support the new feature.

At Microsoft's Surface event today in New York, Panos Panay announced that the Windows October update would hit today and with that comes support for DXR to all Windows 10 machines. DXR also provides access to APIs that will allow others to access the hardware in order to make use of ray tracing in their product.

Three games have been announced that will showcase ray tracing in its feature set. Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Metro Exodus will utilize DXR with more to come in the future.

The Windows October update will be deployed in waves. Right now, two of my three PC's are updated with my Surface Book 2 still waiting to get the download option. So if you got one of the brand new RTX cards out, update your copy of Windows to be ready for when the DXR titles start hitting the scene.
