Some quick thoughts about the Sony PlayStation Classic

With the announcement last night of the Sony PlayStation Classic, the gaming community is about to be plunged into several news cycles of opinions, speculation and complaints. Obviously, as a huge PlayStation fan, I want to get my own opinions, speculation and complaints out there. I also need to register my disdain for Jumping Flash, and wonder about the sanity of whoever created this list of games.

The first thing that came to mind while looking at the promotional images of the PS Classic was that the controller cords has been mysteriously hidden or photoshopped out of every image. This leads me to believe that the PlayStation Classic will, like the NES and SNES Classics before it, have ridiculously short controller cords. I don’t understand this weirdness at all. I bought an SNES Classic last year, and frankly, the short controller cord length made the system pretty much unplayable. Even with pulling the system as far from the TV as possible, my kids and I still had to sit uncomfortably close to the screen to play the games. If this is indeed the case with the PlayStation Classic, it will be a total deal-breaker. Just charge me an extra five bucks and give me some cord length.

I also took quick notice that the controllers being included are not the newer, analog controllers, but are instead the original digital controllers. Modern gamers are going to have one heck of a hard time going back to this style of controller. Considering that we have all been controlling the camera in games with the right analog stick for 20 years, games like that wretched Jumping Flash are going to feel nigh unplayable.

Sony has only announced five of the twenty games that will be available on the system, almost certainly to prompt every game journalist on the planet to write an article blathering on about what other games should be on the system. The fact that Wild Arms is included gave my heart a little leap of joy, which was counteracted by the spite I feel towards the ungodly Jumping Flash. I haven’t given a ton of thought to it, but off the top of my head, here are a few game suggestions that would work okay with the digital controller:

  • King’s Field
  • Vandal Hearts
  • Battle Arena Toshinden
  • Gex
  • Pitball
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • Return Fire
  • Parasite Eve
  • Intelligent Qube
  • Suikoden II
  • Medal of Honor
  • Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time
  • Parappa the Rapper

It would also be very wise for Sony to get rid of Jumping Flash. Just roll with 19 games.

No one wants Jumping Flash.

No one.
