E3 2018: GreedFall’s new trailer is worthy of attention

More On: GreedFall

Wow, you have to give it to Spiders, the French RPG development team. When they swing, they swing big. Even if you don’t recognize the name of the team, you may have seen some of Spiders' games lurking around the “Sale” area of your online game store of choice. Spiders’ previous titles include Faery: Legends of Avalon, Of Orcs and Men, Mars War Logs, and The Technomancer. I’ve bitten on more than one of these games, and even if they didn’t work 100% for me, there are always some interesting ideas at play. Spiders’ games sometimes end up in the bargain bin, but you can tell that they are working towards something big.

And this new trailer for GreedFall, whoa buddy, this thing looks like it might be something big. This trailer just screams “original idea”. Blow this one up to full screen. This is one of the few "cinematic trailers" I've seen that looks truly cinematic.

Set in the 17th Century and depicted with a visual style inspired by European Baroque art, GreedFall tells the story of a group of European refugees, fleeing a continent filled with plague and pestilence. Bummer for them, they land on an island that is rumored to be filled with riches and treasure, only to find a local populace already living there. Double bummer: the locals are protected by “manifestations of the island’s earthly magic in the form of supernatural beings.”

Unsurprisingly, this leads to conflict, but war is not instantaneous. Players will have options as to whether the settlers and the native people interact through diplomacy, deception or flat out combat. As usual, choices the player makes will impact the game world, shifting the dynamics between the various factions in a complicated dance of politics and negotiation.

Spiders is once again going all in on world building, and I have to admit, this game looks fascinating. One does not often see a game set in this time period, and the art style and action sequences depicted in this new trailer look frankly incredible. I’m very excited to keep tabs on GreedFall as it nears release.

GreedFall is set to release in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Learn more, and check out some amazing artwork at the official website.
