Here's a game that definitely flew under my radar for the past year. ELEX, developed by THQ Nordic, is a post-apocalyptic science fiction fantasy RPG action game. It's out now, and it certainly looks interesting.
What looks like a cross between Fallout, Dragon Age, The Surge, and Destiny, and in the facial animation department, Mass Effect Andromeda, ELEX takes place in the world of Magalan, and "players can choose to join three completely different factions and shape the fate of the planet...with their decisions".
Well, from the perspective of the environmental design and the action, the game is not completely lacking in originality. Aside from a few dated-looking smoke screens and monsters that could use a little dust up on the animations of their attacks, there were a few "touches" that caught my eye in the trailer.
The first thing I noticed was that as a character was passing by a rusted out car around the 35 second mark, they reach out to brush their hand on it. The second is the way the wind whips the character's robes while in the flow of movement or combat. Of course, these aren't groundbreaking, and have been done in other games before this one, but the fact that the developers took the time to show that off speaks to me.
